The New Year brings about a time that has us dreaming and scheming about grandiose goals.
People will ask you, what do you want this year? What goals do you want to hit? How can you build out a rigid plan to get there?
You’ll be invited to set BIG goals.
You may even feel imposter syndrome or look at those goals and the gap between where you currently are and where you want to be and slowly (or quickly) get overwhelmed.
Here’s where I would invite you to pause.
I want to invite you to set goals in a different way.
What if instead of focusing on that big end goal you focused on getting just 1% better every single day at the small things that lead to that goal?
One of my favorite thinkers is James Clear. A few years ago I came across his viewpoint on focusing on just 1% better every single day. I loved it so much you’ll often see me sign off emails with “To becoming 1% better”.
The concept is that if you just focus on micro wins, getting better at something daily you will ultimately find yourself much farther ahead of your end goal than if you were to set traditional goals.
Why is this?
Momentum, friends. And a little thing called compounding.
When you have small wins you start to see your work compound. The confidence is being built, you begin to trust the process and yourself along the way.
When you fall in love with the process of becoming, the results often show up better than you could imagine.
When we don’t get caught up in I haven’t “made $X/month revenue” or I didn’t get “X calls booked” this month and instead of laying the foundation the results come with ease.
Which brings me to one of my favorite images and quotes ever:
You know that image we’ve all seen where the person who has been digging for what feels like ever to find gold and is *this* close to cracking open the wall to find gold but turns around, defeated at last?
You want to scream at that person “Don’t give up!! Keep going!!”, right? – Me too
When you’re that person IN IT though…like really in that digging phase….looking for the gold nuggets it can feel like you’re walking through sludge.
But here’s the thing…that feeling is TEMPORARY.
If you can get over the want to find gold instantly and instead keep digging on the path speckled with gold flakes, you’ll find that pot of gold you’re looking for.
This is what getting 1% better every single day is all about. I break down how exactly this feels when running ads during one of our monthly calls inside the Have Them At Hello Accelerator below.
So how does this relate to ads and marketing in general?
Too many people expect to find a gold mine on day two of ads because they heard about someone crushing it with ads and thought “this can’t be that hard, right?”.
What typically isn’t shared is the indicators to look for that tell you you’re getting closer to that gold mine or the LACK of indicators to tell you to alter your route before you’ve spent all your dollar bills.
